Why Your Laptop Got Slow — And What Actually Fixes It

2 June 20265 min read

Most laptops that feel unusable after three or four years aren't worn out. They're bottlenecked by one specific thing, and that thing is usually cheap to address. Here's how to work out which.

It's slow at everything, all the time

If the machine still has a mechanical hard drive, that's your answer. A hard drive is roughly ten times slower than an SSD at the small random reads an operating system does constantly. Moving to an SSD is the single biggest improvement available for an older laptop, and it's usually the cheapest upgrade too. Boot times drop from minutes to seconds.

It's fine until you open a few tabs

That's memory. With 4GB or 8GB, the system starts swapping to disk once you have a browser, a video call and an office document open together. Adding RAM — where the laptop allows it, some newer models solder it in — fixes this directly.

It's fast at first, then crawls after 20 minutes

This is thermal throttling. Dust clogs the heatsink fins, the thermal paste between processor and heatsink dries out, and the machine deliberately slows itself down to avoid overheating. A clean and repaste often restores full performance on a laptop that felt beyond saving. If the fan is loud and the underside is hot, this is very likely your problem.

It's slow only right after starting up

Too many startup programs. This one you can fix yourself in a few minutes — open Task Manager, go to the Startup tab, and disable anything you don't need immediately at login.

When it genuinely is time to replace it

  • The processor is more than eight or nine years old — no upgrade will move it far.
  • The board has liquid damage that's already been repaired once.
  • The cost of the parts needed approaches the price of a current entry-level machine.
